THE HANDMAID'S TALE
The Handmaid's Tale's third seasons continues to get off to something of a slow start, at least compared to the first two seasons.
In part, this is because the show has changed its tone to some degree in its third season. It feels somewhat less terrifying now that June (Elisabeth Moss) has found a safer household with Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford). At the same time, it feels almost like it's spinning its wheels at times. How long must we delay the rebellion?
After all, we've already seen the Marthas in action when they helped June and Nichole escape at the end of last season. How necessary, then, was the entire scenario of June joining the Marthas to help the bomb-maker escape? I suppose this functions more as a way to learn more about Commander Lawrence than anything.
We learn that he's willing to let his Marthas and Handmaid engage in illegal, rebellious activity on the one hand. On the other, we learn that he has a temper and a blatant disregard for the fate of the dead Martha. Oh, and he doesn't like liars.
Whitford is excellent in this role, and Lawrence is one of the most fascinating characters in the entire series. Speaking with Mashable, Whitford had this to say about his character:
"This guy is absolutely fascinating, precisely because he is so filled with contradictions," Whitford told Mashable. "On a lesser show it would be much clearer. It would be a guy who had an epiphany and is on the good side now, and this guy is much more complicated than that."
He added: "The active state of this character is the tussle. It’s his humanity peeking out. I think he gets scared, I think he gets very defensive at times, I think he understands that what he has wrought has caused tremendous pain, but I think there’s a pragmatic emphasis in his brain that says, ‘Yes, this is chemo. It’s horrible and it’s gonna save you, and you’re welcome.’"
